In the experimental short All-around Junior Male, the Inuk filmmaker Lindsay McIntyre documents a traditional Inuit game known as the one-foot high kick. Competitors attempt to leap from both feet to strike a suspended target, landing on the same foot used to kick, with the target rising after each successful round. The game was once used by hunters to indicate a successful hunt and demands extraordinary strength, balance and control. In her portrait, McIntyre captures the Nunamiut athlete Sean Uquqtuq in action with monochrome, hand-processed film that abstracts the landscape around him, focusing on his face and the movement of his body. Combined with an ambient score, these elements lend the piece an immersive, dreamlike quality.
