A brief history of Viagra

In the 1990s, an otherwise unremarkable trial for a potential angina treatment ushered in a new chapter in the history of sex and sexuality. The discovery of some unexpected side effects resulted in the widespread availability of sildenafil – better known by its brand name, Viagra. In this animation, delivered with a healthy dose of bawdy humour, the UK sex educator Justin Hancock offers a brief history of the drug, which provided an effective and relatively cheap solution to the age-old issue of erectile disfunction. Further, Hancock considers the pitfalls of the little blue pill, including the concern that other potential uses of sildenafil have been under-studied and sidelined, and that it’s boosted some unhelpful ideas about sex and masculinity.
