For Father Michael Shanahan, coming out as gay occurred slowly, over decades. The process began with recognising a tension in himself, continued with confiding in his immediate family, and culminated in openly identifying as a gay Catholic priest. In The Longest Walk, Shanahan shares this story, including how, in the depths of prayer, he handled the conflict between his calling to the priesthood and the Catholic Church’s official position that homosexual attraction is an ‘objective disorder’ – a crisis that required its own leap of faith to resolve. Combining archival imagery from Shanahan’s life and contemporary footage of him conducting mass in Chicago, the US director John Haley forms a spare yet complex meditation on identity and belief.
