To what extent is our identity intertwined with our memory? The Prague-based filmmaker Nora Štrbová explores this hazy terrain in her mixed-media animation S P A C E S. The film is based on the life of her brother Šimon, who developed a brain tumour that gradually eroded his memory before ultimately taking his life in his 20s. Fragmented visual sequences, including reimagined moments from Šimon’s life and an interview with his friend, break apart and blur, evoking her brother’s faltering experience of time – and, by extension, his faltering experience of himself. Inventive and poignant in equal measure, Štrbová’s immersive short finds a deeper meaning and emotional pull through this experimentation.
