‘What do you think this movie is about?’
In this video essay, the US filmmaker Kevin B Lee recalls the shock of seeing, as a young film buff, the raw, violent and widely acclaimed Vietnam War film Platoon (1986) with his family in a San Francisco cinema. Recording outside the building that once housed that cinema, he details his harrowing time in the theatre and the film’s reverberations in his life beyond the theatre’s walls, including how it stirred generational trauma in his family and racism at school. With his deceptively simple approach, Lee inverts and subverts Oliver Stone’s epic, crafting, on a shoestring budget, a profound and intensely personal meditation on memory. Lee’s video essay was published as part of ‘Once Upon a Screen’, a series of video essays about film viewing and childhood trauma, commissioned and curated by Ariel Avissar and Evelyn Kreutzer, for The Cine-Files journal of cinema studies, Issue 15.
