Is It a Relationship If No One’s on the Other Side?

For a long time, the idea that we would have A.I.s or robots that we could talk to, interact with, integrate into our personal lives — that was fantasy, science fiction.

…

Alison Gopnik, the child psychologist, in one of her beautiful books about parenting, has a line that’s affected me a lot, which is that we don’t care for people because we love them; we love them because we care for them.

Exactly. It is the same formulation. The way I put it at the time was that nurturance was the killer app — that by asking for our care, they came not just for our attention, but for our attachment.

Maybe that gets to something we were saying around Eliza, that one thing it was showing was people wanted to offer more conversation and vulnerability to the world — the human world — than maybe the human world always wanted from them.
